“The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has made public [its] updated and detailed maps that trace the 100-kilometer West Valley Fault traversing parts of Metro Manila and the adjoining provinces of Bulacan,Laguna, Rizal and Cavite,” writes Dona Z. Pazzibugan in Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The update took two years and has 33 maps in all. According to the Inquirer report, Metro Manila alone has 22 map sheets in a 1:5000 scale. Laguna and Cavite has 10 map sheets and one map sheet for Bulacan and Rizal.
The update is actually a book but Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr., urges the public to download the maps as a means to prepare.
The last map the Phivolcs issued was way back in 2000. A lot has changed since then, with the scientists discovering new fault traces. These new discoveries are included in the map.
“The active fault line has the potential of generating up to 7.2 magnitude earthquake that can devastate the capital and nearby provinces,” continues the report.
The government agency has been urging the public to prepare for earthquakes as the projected risk analysis should a 7.2 magntitude earthquake hit Manila estimate to PHP2.5 trillion economic loss. That’s not mentioning 37,000 fatalities and 11 million square meters of damaged floor area.
