WCCB-NC video journalist Marvin Beach described Sullivan’s demeanor during his first court appearance.
“He was wide-eyed, seemed a little confused, uncomfortable about where he was. His hair was really messy like he just woken up recently and he took just a few glances at his parents and the way he answered the judge, ‘Yes, sir’, ‘Yes, sir’, that’s pretty much it,” Beach said.
Federal authorities began monitoring the teen last April at the request of his father after he was seen destroying some of the religious items in the house.
His father, a retired marine, told local reporters that the warning signs were there as he made the 911 call.
Earlier this month, an undercover agent began communicating with Sullivan online. The teen allegedly even tried to recruit the undercover agent and urged him to kill.
Sullivan then began claiming he was going to assassinate up to a thousand Americans. The terror plot included the use of guns, bombs, and even biological warfare, and he would have carried out firearm attacks at a concert at a bar this weekend.
But the alleged plot was foiled as he was arrested on Friday.
Sullivan faces 40 years in prison and a half-a-million-dollar fine if found guilty.
