One of this year’s summa cum laude graduates at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman will have the highest general weighted average (GWA) in UP since World War II.

Tiffany Uy, graduating with a BS Biology degree on Sunday (June 28), has a GWA of 1.004. She broke the previous record held by BS Mathematics graduate John Gabriel P. Pelias, who scored a GWA of 1.016.

The highest GWA ever earned by a UP graduate was a flat 1.0 made by Exequiel Sevilla who graduated with a degree in B.S. Commerce major in Business Administration, summa cum laude, in 1927.

According to UP, this year’s graduating class will include 28 other summa cum laude graduates and 248 magna cum laude graduates.

Of the total candidates for graduation, 3,491 will receive their undergraduate degrees and 940 their graduate degrees, of which 84 will be conferred their doctoral degrees by being hooded on stage.

This year’s graduation ceremony will be the first to be held in June following the academic calendar shift.
