The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has ordered an investigation into the missing closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera of the Bureau of Immigration at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.

NAIA Terminal 1 manager Dante Basanta said the BI wrote a formal complaint before his office regarding the allegedly stolen CCTV camera, along with the cables for the unit.

The BI did not know who took the CCTV camera and cables, and how and when these were taken.

A portion of the immigration area was recently closed while rehabilitation works were being undertaken by DMCI as part of the rehabilitation of NAIA Terminal 1.

When the works on the immigration area were about to be completed, the intelligence and monitoring team of BI already activated their CCTV camera. The system, however, failed.

A CCTV technician was then surprised to discover that the camera and cables were missing.

According to Basanta, he has also instructed DMCI to coordinate with the immigration bureau regarding the incident.

CCTV cameras are vital in the surveillance and monitoring of all incoming or outgoing passengers. It also has data and facial recognition of known terrorists.

Aside from the camera, lockers in the airport’s press club office were also forced open and contents were stolen.

The MIAA is closely coordinating with the BI to determine the culprits in the incident and to re-install the CCTV system of the bureau.
