Cinemalaya 2015: No feature-length competition? No problem

For its 11th year, Cinemalaya decided to have a go at it without its feature length competition.

Which doesn’t mean there’s nothing to look forward to. On the contrary, the decision has given way, and time, for the festival to drum up a more exciting and varied festival.

Cinemalaya has a killer lineup what with the short film competition, the Asian Indie Film Showcase, a documentary section, as well as films in exhibition. Cinemalaya will run from Aug 7-15 at CCP and Greenbelt 3 in Makati.

There are 11 award-winning movies in the Asian Indie Film Showcase, which will open with Coming Home on Aug 8 at 9pm in the CCP Main Theater.

Other notables include a coming-of-age film, The Monk (12:45pm. Aug 9. CCP Main Theater), the very Japanese-y tale, Summer, Kyoto (12:45pm. Aug 11. CCP Main Theater), The Last Reel (6:15pm, Aug 12. CCP Main Theater), which should give light to Cambodia cinema, and Poet on a Business Trip (9pm. Aug 11. CCP Main Theater), which won the Netpac Award for Best Asian Film at the International Rotterdam Festival 2015.

Meanwhile, there are seven documentaries to be shown the entire week, putting in front and center lives of ‘real people’.

There’s Sayaw (12:45pm. Aug 8. CCP Little Theater), which explores the culture of ethnic dance communities. Salamat sa Alaala (3:30pm. Aug 9. CCP LitteTheater) which is Dik Trofeo’s tribute to National Artist for Cinema Gerardo de Leon; GMA Network’s The Boy Who Cried Books (12:45pm. Aug 8. CCP Studio Theater), about 19-year-old Justin de Castro who ran away from home and decided to earn a living by selling books and ANC’s Titser (12:45pm. Aug 8. CCP Studio Theater).

While yes, there is no feature-length competish, full-lengths will still be shown, thanks to the exhibition part of the program. We are bookmarking: Dementia (6:15pm. Aug 11. CCP Little Theater), starring Nora Aunor; Magkakabaung (12:45pm. Aug 9. CCP Little Theater), which sounds so strange we’re loving it, and Ang Di Paglimot ng mga Alaala (9pm. Aug 13. CCP Studio Theater) because it sounds like there’s so much feels.

Tickets are PHP150 per screening. For the complete screening schedule, click here.
