On Aug 7, the Cultural Center of the Philippines uploaded the 10:27-long video, ‘Imahinasyon,’ as a tribute to the “creative imaginations throughout the 10 years of Cinemalaya.”

According to Associate Festival Coordinator Minda Casagan, ‘Imahinasyon’ was also played during the festival’s opening program on Friday. “It’s like a look back at the past ten years of the festival and it’s the first time we can did something like this for the opening ceremony,” Casagan tells Coconuts Manila over the phone.

A montage of different scenes from films of the festival’s past decade comprise the visuals, while the music is a medley of scores from five Cinemalaya films that have won the Best Film Score award in the previous decade.

The Philippine Harmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Mr Hermiginaldo Ranera, performed music that was arranged by Mr Naldy Rodriguez, also of the PHO.

It opens with Mayohan (2010), and then proceeds to Kamera Obskura (2012) at the 1:48 time mark. Dinig Sana Kita (2009) follows at around the 3:30 time stamp, after which the 10-minute presentation reaches what Coconuts Manila considers the climax.

At about 4:50, the PHO cues in Ang Nawawala (2012) with the Eraserheads’ classic ‘Minsan’. The goosebump-inducing presentation ends with Transit (2013) at the 7:02 mark.

Says Casagan, there might be a similar presentation come on the festival’s closing on Aug 15. “We’re still planning it but that one should be by Mr. Jed Balsamo,” she says.

If this is so — and we hope it is so — then we cannot wait. ‘Imahinasyon’ has been on repeat since we discovered it on Saturday morning. Very beautiful!
