Watch: Two foreigners speak Beki

Got a tip? Send it to us at manila@coconuts.co.

We have to admit it. We Filipinos get a kick whenever we hear foreigners speak Tagalog. No matter how bad or unintelligible, their efforts at saying ‘mabuhay’ or ‘kumusta’ are always met with flattered smiles, and if in a restaurant, ace service.

On YouTube, we found this video, uploaded by American Wil Dasovich, showing two foreigners speak Beki as they ride a jeep, go shopping in Makati Cinema Square, eat at Andok’s, and get a haircut at a neighborhood parlor.

It’s one of his several videos that demonstrate his life in Manila, his impressions of the city, and how he’s learning Tagalog and its many different slang versions (check out the first Salitang Kalye video).

‘Foreigners Speaking Salitang Beki’ is funny, sure, but what kept us glued to the end are the reactions of the Filipinos they meet on the road. The gay guys at the tiangge of Makati Cinema Square challenge them by speaking intermediate Bekinese. The straights at Andok’s are clearly and admittedly confused. An older person calls them g*go.

Now that’s funny.
