Who will be Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II’s running mate?

“House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. recently suggested that if efforts to convince Senator Grace Poe to become his running mate don’t work out, Roxas, the Liberal Party standard bearer, should consider teaming up with Senator Alan Peter Cayetano in next year’s elections,” reports Lira Dalangin-Fernandez on InterAksyon.com.

When asked why he favors Cayetano, who belongs to the Nacionalista Party, Liberal Party member Belmonte said, “Alan is a fighter and fine debater, Mar is too mabait (good).”

The report noted: “Nevertheless, Belmonte stressed that Roxas should have the final say in choosing his running mate.” Belmonte explained, “President (Noynoy) Aquino has passed the ball to Mar. Once he (President) has made a choice (of standard bearer), he should let that choice do the deciding and no longer him.”

The report pointed out that “others whose names have been floated as potential running mates for Roxas are Batangas Representative Vilma Santos, who has said she is not interested, and Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo, the widow of the Interior secretary’s popular predecessor, Jesse Robredo, who died in a plane crash three years ago.”

The filing of certificates of candidacy is set for Oct.
