Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wed, Aug 19, took an apparent swipe at his political rival, Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, calling himself a “batang palengke.”

Binay visited the Bangkerohan Public Market in Davao, the biggest wet market in the city, where he ate breakfast with some vendors.

“Alam mo sa palengke dito ‘yung tunay na tao. Walang plastik, walang mga self-righteous na sila ‘yung ganito, sila ang mga ganoon. Pangalawa, laking-palengke ako. Bago ako nakatapos, namamalengke ako,” Binay told reporters.

A reporter then noted that his rival in the 2010 race for the vice presidency and also in the upcoming 2016 presidential elections was known as “Mr. Palengke” in the 2004 senatorial polls.

“Ah, ewan ko sa kanya. Basta ako laking-palengke,” responded Binay.

“Marunong ho akong tumawad. Bumibili ako ng panutsa. Kumakain ako ng tumbong ng niyog. So, walang deperensya ho diyan. Tsaka, basta’t batang palengke ho ako,” he added.

Binay also went to Barangay 22-C where he thanked the residents for supporting him in the 2010 elections. The Vice President had high number of votes from Davao City.

He also again advised the public to vote according to their conscience.

Despite going around the country, Binay also again denied that he was already campaigning for next year’s polls.

“Ako naman pangalawang pangulo. Kailangan masabi ko sa tao kung ano talaga ang nangyayari. Kung ang tingin nila doon eh kampanya, unang-una hindi pa naman bawal magkampanya,” he said. (with a report from Ara Casas, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao)
