How many references to iconic works can you find in this Anton Mallari piece?

Got a tip? Send it to us at manila@coconuts.co.

From the exhibit opening invite alone, you’ll know that artist Anton Mallari, on his current exhibit Back:Track, will have made a few references from pop culture down to art history.

He says it’s an exhibit that pays tribute to masters who have inspired him, and many others through the centuries.

And the focal point of the exhibit is the artwork above. It’s called ‘Bukas Iba Na’ and in its 6×8 feet glory, the artist has referenced quite a number of iconic art works.

We can see Edward Munch’s The Scream there, Salvador Dali’s Corpus Hypercubus, Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. We were told a portion of Luna’s Spoliarium is in there too, but hmm, guess we’ll have to go to Blanc Gallery and stare at it some more.

Which we think, you should do, too. See how many artists and art works you can find and name in Mallari’s works.

Until Aug 29. Black Gallery, 145 Katipunan Ave, St. Ignatius Village, Quezon City. +63920 9276436. 11:30am-7:30pm.

Heavy metal band Metallica referenced on the invite.
