GoPro: Commuting in Metro Manila’s horrific traffic mess

Got a tip? Send it to us at manila@coconuts.co.

We don’t deny it: Everyone we know who complains about how traumatic traffic is in Metro Manila are people who don’t take public transportation. They’re all either riding an Uber or a taxi, driving their own cars or — the worst shit — being driven around by a full-time Manong.

It’s not because our friends are all rich. It’s because people who take the trike, bus, jeep or FX complain less. They’ve been so inured to road congestion, they think it’s normal to spend four hours of their daily life on the road even if they’re just going to the equivalent of three MRT stations away.

Enough of our friends, though. This video is about Dezza Rodriquez, who volunteered to strap on a GoPro so we could follow her commute from Valenzuela, where she lives, to Makati, where she works. It’s roughly 23kms apart and, on a good day like a Manny Pacquiao fight, you can reach it under an hour. Dezza’s trip takes much longer, of course. And it makes you wonder: Is Metro Manila worth leaving your house for?
