San Juan Mayor Guia Gomez recently signed an ordinance outlawing job discrimination based on age. The ordinance was unanimously passed by the city council.

The workers’ group Partido Manggagawa (PM) lauded the passing of the ordinance, with its secretary general Judy Ann Miranda saying, “Kudos to the local government of San Juan for its pioneering ordinance. Respeto pa more. Skills and attitude do matter. Age and looks don’t.”

“PM called for the strict implementation of the ordinance and also legislation against other prevalent forms of discrimination, as well as the passage of similar ordinances in other cities and industrial towns,” reports InterAksyon.com.

The group is also “lobbying for the enactment of pending bills against age discrimination in the workplace, such as the one authored by Senator Pia Cayetano.” They will also be addressing discrimination against LGBT workers.
