Tropical Storm Kabayan makes landfall, classes suspended in NCR and other areas

Tropical storm “Kabayan” has made landfall over the Baler-San Luis area in Aurora Province, and is now traversing central Luzon, state weather bureau PAGASA said early Fri morning, Oct 2.

In its 5am weather bulletin, PAG-ASA placed Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan and Tarlac under public storm warning signal number 2.

The storm warning signal means the areas are expected to experience winds of 61-120 kilometers per hour in 24 hours.

Public storm warning signal number 1 was hoisted over southern Isabela, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Ilocos Sur, Zambales, Pampanga, Bataan, Bulacan, Rizal, northern Quezon including Polillo Island, and Metro Manila.

PAGASA alerted residents in low-lying and mountainous areas of the provinces placed under public storm warning signals against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Meanwhile, classes in all levels were suspended in the National Capital Region (NCR) and the provinces of Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Cavite and Pampanga. Classes in all levels were likewise suspended in Taytay, Cainta, Teresa and Antipolo in Rizal.

Classes in preschool, elementary and high school are automatically suspended in areas under storm signal number 2, while classes in preschool are automatically suspended in areas under signal number 1.

The tropical storm maintained its strength and is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.

It is moving west-northwest at 20 kph.

PAGASA said moderate to occasionally heavy rains and isolated thunderstorms will be experienced over the provinces of Cavite, Laguna and Batangas.

According to PAGASA, sea travel is risky over the eastern seaboard of northern and central Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Quezon including Polillo Island.

The center of tropical storm “Kabayan” was estimated to be at 60 kilometers west of Baler, Aurora at .around 4am on Fri, Oct 2.
