President Benigno Aquino III attended on Sun, Oct 3, the burial of his former bodyguard at the Panay Alliance Church in Sto Niño, South Cotabato.

After an overnight stay in General Santos City, Aquino went to South Cotabato on Sunday morning to pay his last respects to PO3 Ryan “Bong” Fuyonan, who was earlier described as one of the President’s most dependable and efficient close-in bodyguards.

The 43-year-old Fuyonan was with Aquino from the day he was elected to Congress in 2004 until he assumed the presidency in 2010. He had accompanied the President to several state visits. Fuyonan was diagnosed with cancer last April.

Authorities enforced intensified security measures in the area to ensure Aquino’s safety prior to his arrival. It can be recalled that an improvised explosive device exploded inside a bus last Thursday in Polomolok, South Cotabato, which hurt at least 18 passengers.

Aquino was accompanied by Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Luwalhati Antonino, who said the visit is a personal activity of the President.

Meanwhile, Fuyonan’s family was honored with Aquino’s presence at the funeral in the late bodyguard’s hometown.
