At an event honoring Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) scholars on Tue, Oct 6, TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said in his speech:  “Ako po si Joel Villanueva, certified barista mula sa tech-voc sector. Mag-aapply po ako ng trabaho para maging kinatawan ninyo doon sa Senado (I am Joel Villanueva, a certified barista from the technical-vocational sector. I would like to apply to be your representative in the Senate).”

President Benigno Aquino III, who was at the event, also made a case for Villanueva’s candidacy, saying, “Si Joel po, isang tapat, masipag, at maasahang lingkod bayan (Joel is an honorable and reliable public servant).”

“Villanueva, however, did not confirm if he will be part of the slate of the Liberal Party (LP). He only said that he has been invited to attend the big gathering on Friday, the day the administration party is expected to announce its senatorial ticket for the 2016 elections,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

He added, “Hindi po ako aalis at hindi po ako mawawala sa covering wings ng ating Pangulong Noynoy (I won’t leave the protective covering wings of President Noynoy).”

The report noted: “Villanueva earlier said he does not want to be in the same ticket as someone who believes that he is a criminal, pertaining to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima. Villanueva was included by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in the third batch of cases involving the multibillion-peso pork barrel scam.”
