Suspected haze from Indonesia’s forest fires may affect General Santos City until November, weather forecasters said on Wed, Oct 7.

The unusually thick haze in General Santos City has caused flights to be delayed due to poor visibility.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the haze will eventually dissipate when the seasonal winds change movement.

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) said the haze in the city may come from open fires in Indonesia.

Local industries use charcoal scrubbers to absorb carbon dioxide emissions from factories. Charcoal-making through the kaingin system is strictly prohibited in the city.

The City Health Office also warned the public about the illnesses people may get from haze exposure. These include respiratory infections, such as asthma and pneumonia, and skin asthma.

The public is also advised to limit outdoor activities if the haze or smog is considerably thick.
