Viral: Philippine Star tweets ‘Yoko na pagod na ako’ to its 288k followers

Aww, come here, Philippine Star and we’ll buy you a round of drinks. Or wait, were you hacked, too?

On Monday evening at 9:22pm, Philippine Star shared this sentiment with its 288,000 followers — “Yoko na pagod na ako.”

In Coconuts English: “Fuck this shit, I’m outta here.”

Good thing the venerable daily newspaper managed to delete the tweet within 44 seconds.

But such is the nature of digital media — a digital nomad was able to take a screencap, post it online, and make it viral.

The newspaper has not issued another tweet about this incident, but they did leave us with this food for thought:

We’ve been calling Philippine Star to get their official statement on this but so far, nobody’s available for comment. Yes, we will take your word for it and not quit!

There, there. Just take a rest and everything will be fine — it happens to the best of us.

— Update —

No, the Philippine Star wasn’t hacked on Monday night. It was an honest mistake that often happens given the pace of digital media.

“We all cringed — we still do — at the mistake but we’re thankful that people understood and related to the tweet,” Philippine Star head of operations Tammy Mendoza told Coconuts Manila at 4pm today.

The person who made the mistake still has his job — obviously he didn’t intend to broadcast his hugot statement to Star‘s followers — and no disciplinary action will be taken against him.

But we guess from now on he will always be called The Boy Who Tweeted Yoko Na in the newsroom?

The newspaper will not be issuing an official statement regarding the matter.

“We didn’t really issue any falsehood or misinformation to necessitate an official statement. We feel that the ‘bawi’ quote was enough. We’re sure people realize it was an honest mistake but we’re still sorry it happened. Thanks for hearing us out,” she added.

But of course! Trade war stories over beers, soon?
