Typhoon Marilyn not expected to make landfall

Typhoon Marilyn, slightly weakened as it continued to move west-northwest, according to the PAGASA.

The weather bureau said that as of 6am today, the eye of typhoon Marilyn was located 1,140 km east of Baler, Aurora.

The typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of 195 kph. It is forecast to move west-northwest at 20 kph.

PAGASA weather forecaster Robert Badrina said the typhoon will not directly affect the country and not expect to make landfall, but the agency will continue to monitor it.

However, he said the typhoon will enhance the northeast monsoon that will affect Northern Luzon.

He noted that by Tue, Nov 24, the typhoon is expect change its movement from west-northwest to north-northeast due to the presence of ridge of high pressure area.

If it maintains its speed, the typhoon is expected to exit PAR by Wed evening, Nov 25 or Thu, Nov 26 and will be heading toward Japan.

Meanwhile, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) remains the prevailing weather system that is currently affecting Mindanao.

He said the ITCZ affecting Mindanao is the thick clouds coming from the south of Asia and considered a breeding ground for low-pressure areas (LPAs) or potential cyclones.

PAGASA’s forecast for Mon is cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms will be experienced over eastern and central Visayas, Soccsksargen, and Davao regions while partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains is expected over Batanes, Calayan, and Babuyan group of island.

Fair weather or partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms will prevail over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.
