In an interview on dzMM’s “Mismo” with Jobert Sucaldito and Ahwel Paz, Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez was asked to weigh in on Alma Moreno’s now-infamous interview with Karen Davila.
“Moreno is a former sister-in-law of Marquez, through her brother Joey Marquez,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.
It’s worth pointing out that Marquez herself has gotten flak in the past for her imperfect English, a fact that she has faced with humor.
In the case of Moreno, Marquez had this to say, “May mga senador na matalino. Pag nagse-senador sila. Hindi sila nag-aaccept ng imbitasyon na katulad ni Karen Davila. Yung sa mga intelektwal (There are those who run for senator who play it smart. They don’t accept invitations for interviews like the ones from Karen Davila. It requires them to be intellectual). But if you accepted those kind of invitations, you have to be prepared.”
She added, “You should know also, s’yempre di ba, kunyari, matagal ka na sa politics, kahit sabihin mong councilor or everything, you have to be aware of your surroundings (You should be aware of what’s happening. When you’ve been politics for so long…when you’ve been a councilor and everything…you have to be aware of your surroundings),” she said.
Marquez also has this advice for those who, like her, have difficulties expressing themselves in English. She said, “‘Yung iba nga kasi, pag mahilig mag-Ingles, e di Tagalugin mo. Pag di mo naintindihan, ‘Ano nga ‘yang abbreviation na ‘yan? Ano ibig sabihin?’ Ako, ganon naman ako talaga eh, ‘pag di ko alam (There are those who keep speaking English. Why not speak in Tagalog? If you don’t understand it, ask, ‘What does that abbreviation stand for? What does it mean? That what I do when I don’t know things).”
