“The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has disqualified Senator Grace Poe from the 2016 presidential race for not meeting the residency requirement of the Constitution for presidential candidates,” reports GMA News Online.

The report noted: “In a 35-page resolution, the Comelec 2nd Division said it voted 3-0 in favor of the petition filed by lawyer Estrella Elamparo, who is seeking the cancellation of Poe’s certificate of candidacy for president.”

The members of the division are Commissioners Al Parreño, Arthur Lim, and Sheriff Abas.

The division, as the report indicated, “sided with Elamparo’s argument that Poe failed to meet the 10-year residency requirement mandated by the Constitution for a presidential candidate.”

In its resolution, the division said: “Wherefore, in view of all the foregoing considerations, the instant Petition to Deny Due Course to or Cancel Certificate of Candidacy is hereby granted.”

It went on to say, “Accordingly, the Certificate of Candidacy for President of the Republic of the Philippines in the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections filed by respondent Mary Grace Natividad Sonora Poe Llamanzares is hereby cancelled.”

Poe’s running mate, Sen. Francis Escudero, confirmed the disqualification but did not elaborate.
