New Bilibid superintendent wants to use freight containers to ease overcrowding

This guy is thinking out of the box.

In various parts of the world, freight containers are being used as cells in overpopulated prisons and the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) could soon follow suit.

The maximum security compound was built to house only 6,000 inmates, but it currently holds around 15,000.

“This is our immediate solution to the congestion problem,” NBP Superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf told Inquirer.net.

Freight containers are cheaper to set up than concrete structures and can also be moved around the compound should the need arise, he said.

Schwarzkopf disclosed the plan after the Bureau of Corrections (BOC) demolished a cluster of shanties along the Maximum Security Compound last week.
