Kindhearted GrabCar driver surprises suspicious passenger

In this day and age, taxi passengers in Metro Manila have a reason to be paranoid, especially because there has been a string of troubling taxi incidents making rounds online.

But Gelica Manuel Talauan’s GrabCar driver, Carlo Santiago Diaz, passed through a shady sidestreet without any modus.

On a lengthy but entertaining Facebook post, Gelica shared her heartwarming experience after boarding a GrabCar at Gateway Mall in Cubao on her way to Tondo, Manila.

According to Gelica’s post, she couldn’t help but fear for her safety when Carlo turned to a dark street near Pedro Gil Avenue.

“I was pretending to look at my phone, but all my ‘danger sensors’ were on high-alert because the Grab driver suddenly slowed down and said something that I wasn’t able to catch entirely.” Gelica said.

As it turned out, Gelica had nothing to fear.

Carlo stepped out of his car to offer a bag of food to an elderly woman sleeping on the pavement.

Gelica latered discovered that Carlo, his friend and his girlfriend regularly chip in to buy meals for homeless people on the street.

Araw-araw kasi, magda-drive ka, makikita mo sila lalo na sa gabi na nakahiga sa bangketa. Madalas mga gutom, pero itinutulog na lang yung gutom nila. Kaya naisip naming gawin `to. Para at least, makatulong kaming malamnan yung mga tiyan nila kahit isang gabi lang. (When you drive everyday, you’ll see them on the pavement. They are often hungry but they sleep instead. We thought of doing this so that we can fill their tummies even for just a night),” Carlo said.

Carlo added that he preferred to take things into his own hands instead of waiting for the government to act.

As of writing, the post has more than 180,000 likes and 22,000 shares on Facebook, thanks to Genica’s excellent storytelling.

Carlo has not yet made a comment on the viral post.
