Jonalyn Viray moves to ABS-CBN, changes name to Jona

Goodbye, Jonalyn Viray. And welcome to this world, Jona, enjoy your stay here!

It’s not just the name that’s changed for this 26-year-old singer. At a press conference today, it was revealed that she has left GMA-7 and is now a Kapamilya of ABS-CBN.

This was announced at the launch of a new TV show called We Will Survive, which stars Pokwang and Melai Cantiveros and starts airing on Feb 29. To spice up the afternoon, Jona sang the show’s the song, Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”

Why the name change? It’s a celebration of a “fresh start” in her “new home,” said Jona. We like that her new is more sophisticated and less jologs.

“I’m very happy and nervous. Nervous because it’s a new environment, but happy because it’s a new experience for me.”

But why oh why did she switch network? “Mas nabigyan nila ako ng tiwala,” she said.

In 2005, Jona won the GMA-7 singing competition “Pinoy Pop Superstar”. She was known for a time as a member of the female singing group La Diva with Maricris Garcia and Aicelle Santos.

The group disbanded a few years ago and Jonalyn went solo. She’s best known for singing “Help me Get Over,” the theme song of the 2013 gay-theme drama My Husband’s Lover.

Jonalyn follows fellow singers Kyla, JayR and Jolina Magdangal who recently moved from GMA-7 and ABS-CBN.

Good luck, Jonalyn, er, Jona!
