The family of three-year-old Caitlin Soleil Lucas was “relieved” to discover that she has leukemia.
“Relieved” that after more than two long months, doctors were finally able to name the child’s mystery illness.
On Friday Mar 4, experts at the National University Hospital (NUH) finally confirmed that Courageous Caitie has juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML).
The diagnosis came during the family’s short trip to Singapore, where the little girl received medication and underwent tests at the NUH, a well-known medical research facility.
This rare and serious kind of leukemia is caused by an overproduction of immature white blood cells in the bone marrow. It mostly affects children.
Courageous Caitie’s illness first surfaced last September as seemingly harmless “insect bites” on her right ankle. They quickly developed into skin lesions, which spread across her body.
A team of doctors is now currently discussing the best course of action to take.
On Mar 3, Caitie was granted an afternoon away from the hospital. She explored the Singapore Zoo with her parents before they flew back home to Manila.
Currently, there are fund raisers helping Caitie’s parents raise the money for her medical treatments. For more information, please visit Courageous Caitie’s Facebook page.
