For artists and nerds: Head to Cebu for the zine fest this weekend!

Magazines are too mainstream for you? Perhaps you’ll find zines much more enjoyable.

So what makes a zine? They’re similar to monthly glossies but they’re usually smaller. More importantly, they’re made with love by artists who usually use DIY methods of printing. Small-circulation, often non-profit.

Think of them as the publishing industry’s version of indie short films.

They’re particularly associated with the underground scene but it’s really hard to generalize anything about zines.

Locally, there are numerous zine titles, and they’re all catering to a specific niche.

There’s Mono for photography. There’s Mabuhigh Daze for street art. There’s Em Zine for literature. Even Jun Sabayton sold his own Bayaw zine at last year’s Art Fair.

And the 2016 #Cebuzinefest? It’s the best way to get into the local zine culture!

The 12-hour event on Apr 16 is a gathering of artists, designers, publishers, bookshops and companies who are all involved in making zines. About 50 zine makers will be there, including artists from London, Berlin and New York.

This event is a must for those who want to learn the ropes of zine making.

There will be a linocut workshop by Jeffrey Sisican, and an alternative photography and zine production workshop hosted by Brian Sergio.

More importantly, the event will be brimming with zine mavens and creative inspirers. It’s definitely going to be a healthy environment for the creatives out there.

For more information about the event, visit the Cebu Zine Fest website.

Apr 16, 10am onwards. 856G Gallery, 856 A.S. Fortuna St. Banilad Mandaue City, Cebu. Cebu Zine Fest.
