5 things we learned from Pia Wurtzbach this week

Reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach’s is in town and here’s the latest about her.

1. Despite her pro-LGBT advocacy, she still admires Manny Pacquiao…as a boxer

The beauty queen and the boxer met for the first time yesterday at Hotel Novotel, hours before Wurztbach’s press conference. Despite their differing beliefs — she is a vocal supporter of gender equality and the LGBT community, he thinks homosexuals are low lives — she chose to highlight what they have in common. “I’m still proud of him as a boxer. Even if we have different opinions on some things, we’re both Filipinos and as a fellow Filipino, I was proud of his victory for the Philippines,” she said.

2. She is currently dating social media celeb Dr. Mike

The rumors have been swirling around for months now, but it wasn’t until last night that the current Miss Universe finally admitted that she is currently dating someone: social media celebrity Mikhail Varshavski. “He’s adjusting to the Filipino ways a lot because it’s very different, the culture is very different. I had to explain to him how it is in the Philippines, kung papaano ba manligaw, and kung alam ba niya kung anong ibig sabihin ng pangliligaw,” she told Boy Abunda on ABS-CBN’s Tonight with Boy Abunda.

3. She wants to star in a Broadway show

Before she was a beauty queen, Pia had a busy career as an actress, and there’s a part of her that still dreams of acting in a Broadway show. Now based in New York, she’s seen her fair share of shows on the Big White Way (the beauty queen also saw shows on the West End while in London). Of course, she’s not taking her dream of becoming a Bond girl off the table. “Or a superhero. Or Wonder Woman, but Wonder Woman is taken already,” she quipped. “Or just acting, you know. Acting, I would love to do.”

4. She is actively campaigning for PH to host Miss U

Pia did not confirm if the Philippines will indeed be chosen to host the next Miss Universe pageant, but she wants it to happen. “We are actively campaigning and we want the pageant to happen here. We want it to happen. It hasn’t been confirmed yet. Is it a done deal? I don’t know. But we do want it to happen here.” Wouldn’t it be sweet for Binibining Pilipinas ‘”three-peater” Pia to crown her Miss U successor in her home turf?

5. A back-to-back win is not impossible!

As the reigning Miss Universe, Pia shouldn’t be seen playing favorites. But wouldn’t it be sweet if her successor happens to be another Pinay? It’s not impossible. In fact, by being the star judge at this weekend’s Binibining Pilipinas pageant, she can use her Miss U know-how to pick the candidate with the most potential.
