‘Laglag-bala’ returns? Elderly couple offloaded from US-bound flight due to bullet in bag

It seems like the laglag-bala or tanim-bala (bullet-planting) nightmare is back at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). In this instance, it’s at NAIA Terminal 1.

Senior citizens Esteban and Salvacion Cortabista — ages 78 and 74 — were offloaded from Korean Air flight KE 622 bound for Los Angeles, California, after live ammunition for a .38 caliber pistol was found in the handcarried bag of Salvacion.

“They couple denied owning the ammunition. Esteban said he was surprised that they were able to get past the first X-ray scanner when they entered NAIA Terminal 1 but were later on stopped at the final screening area,” reports Raoul Esperas on ABS-CBNnews.com.

Salvacion said, “Dalawang beses na po kami bumibiyahe sa America at alam na alam po namin na bawal ang mag-dala ng bala. Eh bakit naman po kami magdadala ng bala (We have gone to the US twice and we know that bringing bullets isn’t allowed. So why would we bring one)?”

Esteban added, “Dumaan po kami sa unang X-ray eh wala naman pong nakita. Eh bakit dito po eh biglang may nakitang bala sa bag ni misis (We went through the X-ray screening and no bullet was found. Why is there suddenly a bullet in my wife’s bag at the final screening area)?”

The case is under investigation.
