We know that the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City is crowded as hell, but somehow the inmates were still able to smuggle in pets — exotic and protected wildlife at that.
According to a report by Philippine Daily Inquirer, four sugar gliders were among the creatures recovered on Tue, Apr 19, at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP). It’s the first time that sugar gliders were confiscated since “Oplan Galugad” started.
The inmates kept the pets for recreational purposes, said NBP director, Supt. Richard Schwarzkopf
Usual contrabands like improvised firearms, cell phones, air coolers, speakers, weighing scales, knives and Wi-Fi routers were also found at the raid of the compound’s Quadrant 4, Building 5.
The sugar gliders are now in police custody as NBP does not allow inmates to keep pets and exotic animals
However, Schwarzkopf said that they are considering the possibility of letting inmates keep pets like dogs or cats because they can help the inmates with their reformation.
The items recovered were likely smuggled in through garbage trucks, ambulances or vehicles of catering services.
This is the 29th Oplan Galugad raid since Nov 2015.
