Glass wall shatters, portion of ceiling collapses, at NAIA Terminal 1

This hasn’t been a good week for Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.

At around 2:40pm on Tue, Apr 19, a glass partition at the pre-departure lounge near Gate 10 shattered just after passengers had passed. Nobody was reported hurt.

“Renz Caldejon of the airport’s operations division, who is in charge of the aerobridges, claimed that two airplanes at gates nine and 11 started their engines at the same time, causing the glass partition to vibrate and shatter,” reports Rudy Santos in The Philippine Star.

Then at around 10am on Wed, Apr 20, part of the ceiling at the Duty Free Shop’s perfume section collapsed.

A black plastic bag, left behind by workers when the ceiling was being renovated, fell through. The ceiling was made of gypsum board.

The report noted: “According to a sales clerk, water dripping from the air conditioning system weakened the ceiling and caused it to collapse.”

NAIA-1 manager Dante Basanta was told by engineers from the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), which runs the NAIA, that “the ceiling will be fixed by a contractor because they hired a contractor to design the area.”
