Will Jejomar Binay be our next President?

This is part of Coconuts Manila’s quickie thinkpiece series on the presidentiables.

Among all the presidentiables, Vice President Jejomar Binay was the very first one who expressed his intention to run for President. In fact, everyone knows that he was poised to run for President in 2010, but he backed out when the Liberal Party fielded then-Senator Noynoy Aquino.

Binay, though, has done his so-called legwork for years. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Law, he later made his mark as mayor of Makati for a little over two decades, and had forged partnerships with sister cities all over the country. He also cultivated his connection with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.

There’s no doubt that Binay has put in the long hours in his bid to get elected to the highest position in the land.

But Binay’s dream of becoming President suffered a lot of sebacks in the form of a flood of corruption allegations against him and his family. Binay has denied the allegations and called out his political opponents for being behind them. He has said that they will do anything to derail his presidential dream.

Binay’s supporters praise him for being a great administrator and a hardworking lawmaker. They admire him for rising from his humble beginnings. They love him for his rapport with the masses. Despite the big blows that came his way, Binay has told his supporters, “Magtiwala kayo, sa araw ng eleksyon, magtatagumpay tayo! Mananalo ako bilang pangulo ng Pilipinas (Have faith, on Election Day, we will be victorious. I will win as President of the Philippines)!”
