Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte — the country’s next President — is on the cover of the May 23 issue of TIME magazine. The Duterte cover is available in the Philippines only, though the story appears in the international edition.
The cover story, “The Punisher,” was written by Charlie Campbell.
Duterte didn’t pose for the cover. According to photographer and big Duterte fan Edwin Tuyay, it was from a series of portaits he had taken for Asian Dragon, a high-end magazine for the Chinese Filipino community.
It was purchased for one-time use only, the photographer said on his Facebook account.
