Duterte wants to set a 72-hour deadline for gov’t transactions

With long lines and under the table transactions, dealing with government offices in the Philippines can easily turn into a horror story.

Incoming President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan to set a 72-hour deadline for the completion of all government transactions is a welcome change.

“I don’t want to see people queuing,” Duterte said.

According to Duterte, Davao already has a system where government transactions like business permits are completed within three days. Those who aren’t able to meet the deadline are required to explain the cause of delay.

He plans to implement the same system to the rest of the country once he assumes office.

Akala ko ba bayad tayo sa tao? Where are the computers that will make it fast? We’ve been acquiring computers to make our work easier, and here comes the delay, for nothing. Ayaw niyo lang magtrabaho (Aren’t people paying us? Where are the computers that will make it fast? We’ve been acquiring computers to make our work easier, and here comes the delay, for nothing. You just don’t want to work),” he said.

He also warned against officials engaging in red tape.

Maraming Pilipino d’yan sa labas, naghahanap ng trabaho (There are a lot of Filipinos out there looking for jobs),” he said.
