Richest senator got even richer by PHP1.5 billion in 2015

Want to know where the rich people hang out? Some of them are in the Senate, where we have 23 millionaires and one billionaire.

In an effort to be transparent about their wealth, Philippine politicians are required to declare their net worth on their statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) each year.

Cynthia Villar, with a net worth of PHP3.5 billion, was the richest senator in 2015.

Her assets include PHP4.5 million pesos worth of real estate, 3.49 billion worth of stocks and other real and personal properties. She has zero liability, Inquirer reports.

In 2014, Cynthia Villar was valued at only PHP1.983 billion. She is married to business tycoon and former senator Manny Villar. Their family is in the real estate industry.

With a net worth of PHP5.847 million, Chiz Escudero is the poorest senator. His net worth dropped from PHP6.049 million last year. The assets of his celebrity wife Heart Evangelista are not included in his SALN.

The poorest senator of 2014 got richer by PHP400,000. Antonio Trillanes IV is now on the 23rd spot with PHP5.984 million.

Included in the top 10 are Grace Poe, who ran in the last election for presidency; Bongbong Marcos who ran as vice president; and Jinggoy Estrada, Bong Revilla Jr. and Juan Ponce Enrile, who are all charged with plunder over the pork barrel scam.
