Nueva Ecija elects first ever female governor: Czarina Umali

This seems to be a milestone year for female lawmakers in Nueva Ecija.

“The province recently elected its first ever female governor: Rep. Czarina Umali, who gained 215,000 votes and defeated former fourth district congressman Rodolfo Antonino for the post,” reports Manny Galvez in The Philippine Star.

The report noted: “No woman had served as governor of Nueva Ecija. The closest to have come to the capitol seat was Inday Melencio as vice governor. Umali succeeded where three other women gubernatorial aspirants before her failed, two of whom were former congresswomen. Umali had the support of the sitting governor (her husband, last term Governor Aurelio ‘Oyie’ Umali), a privilege not enjoyed by the three previous female gubernatorial aspirants.”

Four female politicians have also been elected to represent each of the province’s four districts: Estrellita Suansing (1st District); Micaela Violago (2nd District); Rosanna Vergara (3rd District); and Magnolia Antonino (4th District).”

“Suansing and Antonino are reelectionists while Violago and Vergara are political newbies, aided by their husbands who are both incumbents,” the report added.
