Duterte apologizes for death of Canadian national in phone call with Trudeau

What does it take to get a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau? Well, it helps if you’re the incoming President of the Philippines.

In a press conference that began late Wed night, May 25, and lasted until very early Thu, May 26, incoming President Rodrigo Duterte revealed that he got a call from Trudeau. It may be recalled that Duterte had initially said that he wanted to pattern his Cabinet after Trudeau’s.

Duterte said they talked for around nine minutes about several issues, with Trudeau bringing up the “universal declaration of human rights.”

Duterte also apologized to Trudeau for what happened to Canadian national John Ridsdel, who was kidnapped and brutally murdered by the terrorist group, Abu Sayyaf.

Duterte revealed that he had told Trudeau, “Please accept my apologies for the incident that resulted in the killing of your national and we will try our very best to make sure nothing of the sort will happen again.”

“Duterte also commended Trudeau for the protection Filipino workers receive while working in Canada,” reports GMA News Online.

Trudeau is the second world leader who has called Duterte. US President Barack had already called him last week.
