NTC expects Globe, PLDT to improve Internet services in one year

Nothing like a big scare to shake things up.

Last week, the National Telecommunications Commission granted the request of Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. to co-use the 700Mhz frequency infrastructure developed by San Miguel Corporation’s telecom business.

The NTC is giving the two telcos a maximum of one year to “significantly” improve their Internet services. If they don’t deliver, the NTC will revoke the co-use agreement it granted the telcos.

“NTC deputy commissioner Edgardo Cabarios explained that building additional base stations would take months and years while sharing frequencies is the fastest way to go,” reports Vivienne Gulla on ABS-CBNnews.com.

The report noted: “Cabarios explained the decision is in response to the order issued by incoming President Rodrigo Duterte for telcos to improve Internet services the soonest time possible. In fact, Cabarios expects Globe and PLDT to increase Internet speed from the current 1mbps to an average of 5mbps in three to six months at no additional cost to consumers.”
