MMDA pushes 15-second waiting time for vehicles dropping off and fetching school kids

Memo to those who drop off and fetch kids from school: Save the long good-byes for other times.

“The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has asked school administrators to enforce the rules on 15-second waiting time and the no double parking on campus zones,” reports Anna Liza Vilas-Alavaren in Manila Bulletin.

The 15-second rule is currently being implemented at the Ateneo De Manila University in Quezon City.

MMDA Chairman Emerson Carlos said “these rules, when implemented, would help intended to ease traffic congestion in perennially traffic-prone areas leading to schools or universities in Metro Manila.”

Carlos was quoted as saying, “We are urging schools to adopt the 15-second rule for children to get and alight from the vehicles to help ease traffic congestion this school opening.” He added, “The school administrators are the ones who need to implement this [rule]. No need for government intervention and we want it that way. For the parents, no more goodbye kisses, hugs, late giving of allowance to avoid traffic build-up.”

Carlos said, though, that they still have to write or meet with school officials to explain the said policy.

The report noted: “The no double parking rule will also observed in the vicinity of schools. Those who will not follow run the risk of having their vehicles towed.”
