Duterte favors public hanging to scare criminals

Because the thought of death isn’t horrid enough, incoming President Rodrigo Duterte wants to frighten potential criminals with the possibility of death by hanging.

At a meeting with congressmen on Wednesday, the 71-year-old leader who is fervently pushing for the reimposition of death penalty has again expressed his preference for hanging as the method of execution for criminals who will be given the capital punishment.

Hindi daw nakakatakot yung lethal kasi patutulugin mo. Samantalang yung hanging makikita mong nagkakawag-kawag doon,” Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez told ABS-CBN News.

(“He said that lethal injection is not scary because it’s just like going to sleep. With hanging, you’ll see the criminal flailing wildly”)

Former president Gloria Arroyo repealed the death penalty law in 2006 but Duterte has made it clear that he is in favor of reviving the death penalty in the country.
