It’s never too late to take baby steps.
A woman named Delia Tusan, a resident of General Santos City, is finally pursuing her dream of going to school. She decided to do things right and enroll in kindergarten. This has caused quite a fuss at the New Society Central Elementary School because Delia is already a 60-year-old grandmother.
Delia, you see, had been prevented by poverty from pursuing formal education for most of her life. Later on, her life as a wife and mother got her busy. Now that her kids are grown up, Delia has the time to finally fulfill her dream.
Apparently, Delia’s desire to go to school was rekindled when she was taking her grandchildren to school.
Delia happily recited the alphabet and counted numbers with 22 five-year-old kids. “She has become a source of inspiration to other parents. Some of them were convinced to return to school, like 37-year-old Angelie (woman in pink in photo) who is also Lola Delia’s classmate,” reports Jay Dayupay on ABS-CBNnews.com.
The report noted: “School principal Gloria Tolentino said that after three months, Lola Delia and Angelie will be recommended to their specialized reading program if their performance will improve.”
“Kasi mahirap pag nandiyan sila sa mga children sumabay. Pwede namin silang i-recommend sa aming reading program para matutukan sila,” she said.
(“It’s difficult if they’re always there with kids. We can set them up in our reading program so we can focus on them.”)
As for Delia, she stated, “Napakahalaga ng may pinag-aralan, kasi tulad ngayon mahirap ako kasi wala akong natapos.”
(“It’s important to get some education. It’s hard to be illiterate like me.”)
