MMDA, Ateneo to launch shuttle service to lessen Katipunan Avenue traffic

We hope this works.

On Tue, Jun 21, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Ateneo De Manila University (AdMU) will launch a shuttle service program designed to reduce the number of vehicles plying along traffic gridlock Katipunan in Quezon City during school days.

The MMDA and AdMU will sign the memorandum of agreement for the Ateneo Shuttle Service Program on Mon, Jun 20 at the MMDA main building on EDSA corner Orense Street in Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City.

Atty. Cris Saruca, head of Traffic Discipline Office of MMDA, explained that the program “aims to decongest traffic along Katipunan through lessening the number of private vehicles going to the AdMU campus.” The shuttle service is for the school’s employees, students, and teachers.

“Under the agreement, there will be three transport hubs in Metro Manila — Temple Drive and UP Ayala Techno Hub in Quezon City and SM Marikina in Marikina City —where Ateneo students, teachers, and employees can be dropped off and picked up by private vehicles,” reports Maricar B. Brizuela in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

From the pick-up points, the employees, students, and teachers will then be transported to the AdMU campus. They will also be dropped off at the said pick-up points.

As MMDA chair Emerson Carlos said, “If we insist on having one vehicle per student, there [will really be a buildup] at the [school] gates. We will have a hard time managing traffic.”

The volume of vehicles along Katipunan Avenue goes up by 20% on a school day, particularly from 5:30am to 8am and again from 3pm to 7pm. with a report from Philippine News Agency
