In spite of the tense relationship between the Catholic Church and the incoming President Rodrigo Duterte, three bishops gave credit where it is due.

Duterte has received praise for his simplicity and frugal lifestyle.

On Wednesday, Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao lauded Duterte’s conscious decision to keep things simple at his inauguration on Thu, Jun 30.

“I am happy about the simple inauguration. We need to be simple even in our way of life. Simplicity is an important value that we have to promote,” Ongtioco told Radio Veritas.

Bishops Antonio Maralit of Boac and Pedro Arigo of Puetro Princesa also said that Duterte’s simplicity is a good example for the Filipino people. It shows solidarity with the poor communities of the country.

Breaking several inauguration traditions, the Duterte camp said that only 627 people will attend the inauguration at the Malacañang Palace.

Duterte and the Catholic Church have gotten into controversial disagreements, particularly about the promotion of artificial birth control and death penalty. With reports from CBCP News.
