Starting Jul 1, National Museum won’t be charging entrance fees

Not just for certain days, not just for an entire month. Admission to the National Museum and all its regional sites nationwide is now permanently free of charge to all visitors — both Filipinos and foreigners.

Yes, that means art hounds can now rub elbows with just about anyone (cough-cough, vagabonds) who feels the same affection for Juan Luna’s massive (and bloody) Spoliarium from 1884.

The entrance fee was waived to “build upon significant spikes in viewership, especially among younger Filipinos.”

“With this new policy we hope to reach more people than ever before, both by encouraging visits to our museums, and by bringing the National Museum’s programs and resources to communities throughout the national capital and all the regions of our archipelago,” it said on Facebook.

The National Museum used to charge PHP50 for students, PHP120 for senior citizens, and PHP150 for adults. Free admission was initially implemented on Sundays.

The National Museum is located in Ermita, with regional sites in Vigan, Kiangan, Kabayan, Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs, Tabaco, Bohol and Butuan.
