In the age of email, text messaging, online chats, and emoji reactions, letter writing is fast becoming an endangered skill.
That’s why the Philippine Postal Corporation wants to bring back the passion of letter writing among the younger generation.
Once again, it’s inviting students to join the nationwide “Salamat Po” letter writing contest.
“Salamat po” means “Thank you.”
Through the contest, which is now on its fourth year, PHLPost hopes to reach a wider cluster of public and private schools in order to effectively promote and develop young students’ skills in composition.
“Basically, we (PHLPost) feel that the theme “Salamat Po” (Thank you) is appropriate in today’s generation especially among the Filipino youth to inculcate the virtue of gratitude through the art of letter writing. It’s an experience that modern technology cannot touch,” explained Luis Carlos, PHLPost assistant postmaster general for marketing.
Starting this month, the “Salamat Po” letter writing contest shall form part of the celebration of Buwan ng Wika. Schools are also encouraged to include letter writing activities in their events and programs.
According to PHLPost, the contest is open to all elementary and high school (junior and senior) students from both public and private institutions nationwide.
Students are urged to send a “Thank You” letter to anyone they want using Filipino or English Language following the proper format of writing a letter (place and date, addressee’s signature, opening and closing salutation and signature) anywhere via postal mail for a chance to win PHP50,000.
The school and the teacher will also receive the same cash prize given to the winning student in the Apr 2017 grand draw.
The letter should be handwritten, include the name and the school teacher and mailed to addressee via the post office and accredited postal stations for delivery anywhere in the Philippines with postage rate of PHP12 (1 to 2 pages only). Students may also send letters/postcards/aerogramme abroad using Airmail services, published rates applied.
PHLPost can also schedule pick up services of all entries in case post offices are inaccessible to students upon the request of school heads.
Meanwhile, a semi-grand draw will be held on Mar 15, 2017, where the winning student, his/her respective school and the teacher will receive PHP10,000 each.
