Let’s hope the President’s warnings will get many abusive employers to do what’s right.
President Rodrigo Duterte recently lamented many employers’ “hard-headedness” in following labor policies.
“Duterte has maintained his zero tolerance stand on contractualization, threatening to shut down any company that would not comply with labor laws,” reports Ma. Czarina A. Fernandez on Inquirer.net.
When Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III pointed out that he needs more personnel to inspect companies to ensure they are not exploiting their worker, Duterte added, “Huwag na ninyo akong hintayin na mahuli ko kayo because I will be unforgiving. You will not only lose your money, you will lose your pants. No tolerance ako dito.”

Duterte cited the plight of “security guards who are allegedly forced to work for 24 hours by security agencies.”
“Alam mo, ito, sila they work 24 hours ang shift nila, when they’re only supposed to render eight hours. Alam mo, karamihan niyang may-ari ng security agencies, most of them are military men,” Duterte said.
(“You know, these security guards work for 24 hours each day when they’re only supposed to render eight hours. You know, most of the people who own security agencies are military men.”)
Duterte said these former military official should know better. He also said that companies should be obligated to provide their employees with the standard benefits.
In closing, Duterte added, “If you do not take care of the workers, then I cannot take care of you.”
