Basketball player Mac Cardona overdosed yesterday, now in stable condition

NLEX Road Warriors veteran Mac Cardona was rushed to the hospital on Sun evening, Aug 21, after he reportedly overdosed on sleeping pills in an apparent suicide attempt.

The 34-year-old was admitted to the intensive care unit of the University of Perpetual Help Hospital in Las Piñas and is now in stable condition, says ABS-CBN News.

Cardona’s sister Rowena sensed that there was something wrong with the athlete in their last conversation.

Ang huling nasabi lang po niya sa akin, ‘Ate hindi ko na kaya.’ Nagpapaalam siya… Nararamdaman ko na may balak siyang gawin sa sarili niya,” she said in an interview on DZMM.

(The last thing he told me was ‘I can’t handle it anymore.’ He was saying goodbye… I felt that he was planning to do something to himself.)

Cardona posted a photo showing prescription pills on Instagram on Sun, but it has already been deleted.

The former Green Archer player was recently arrested when his partner, actress Bianca Jackes, complained of domestic violence.

According to Rappler, the couple got into a heated argument at their home in Merville Park, Parañaque, on Fri, Aug 19.

Cardona reportedly pointed a gun at Jackes, but Rowena denied the allegations. She said that Cardona does not own a gun.

Isa iyon sa ikina-depress sa kapatid ko na nag-trigger sa kanya na gawin ‘to sa sarili niya. Sarili naman niya ang sinaktan niya,” Rowena said.

(That’s one of the things which triggered him to do this. He decided to hurt himself.)

The Road Warriors has released a statement to show support for their athlete.

“We urge the public to allow Macmac and his family to have privacy at this difficult time,” said team manager Ronald Dulatre.

“Macmac is part of the NLEX Road Warriors team. We are providing whatever assistance he needs from us during this time. Thank you.”
