Poet detained for allegedly writing what’s on everyone’s mind: MRT sucks

Kilometric queues just to get a train ticket, delayed services, packed carriages with hardly any airconditioning…what’s not to hate about Metro Manila’s rapid transit system?

So when an exasperated passenger scribbles “MRT bulok” (MRT is rotten) on the train door, management should suck it and take it like a man, right?

That wasn’t the case last night when MRT guards swooped in on a regular passenger and accused him of vandalizing the train.

They detained him for hours and claimed to have evidence to prove that the accused was responsible for the graffiti, but refused to show it to media, reports ABS-CBN News.

It just so happens that the person they arrested was Angelo Suarez, who in 2014 wrote an expletive-laden open letter to MRT management and shared it on Facebook, where it immediately became a viral hit.

Because, you know, people agree with what he said?

According to Suarez, an award-winning poet and a performance artist, last night around 9:30pm, after alighting at Quezon Avenue station, he noticed a security guard trailing him and advising fellow officers via walkie talkie where Suarez was about to exit.

Suarez tried to go the opposite direction, but found more guards waiting for him. They accused him of vandalzing the train with the words “MRT bulok”.

This morning, Suarez’s partner wrote that they were at the Quezon City Hall of Justice.

“We are being taken around for nothing… we just came from MRT-3 Office at MRT North Avenue Station only to learn that GM Buenafe rescinded agreement for a dialog. We are now at QC Hall of Justice for inquest,” she said.

Suarez has denied the allegation.
