Atom Araullo keeps TV hosting job, but resigns as reporter at ABS-CBN

As they say, all good things must come to an end — and so it has with news reporter Atom Araullo, sort of.

The 33-year-old journalist, who started his career at a young age on the pre-teen TV magazine show 5 and UP back in the day, has decided he’s had it up to here with the reporter’s daily grind at ABS-CBN News. We will no longer be seeing him on TV Patrol.

Giving up the limelight is not so easy, though.

He will remain as on-camera talent of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs where he currently co-anchors Umagang Kay Ganda and Red Alert.

Former ABS-CBN employee and now talent manager and showbiz columnist Noel Ferrer broke the news on Abante Tonite on Fri, Aug 26.

The move, Ging Reyes, ABS-CBN News and Current affair’s big boss, told Manila Bulletin, is so he could “pursue other endeavors that would also help him grow as a journalist and as a host.”

According to Fashion Pulis, Atom “will use his time to complete his pending book projects, explore opportunities to pursue his interest in making independent films, and possibly write a column in one of the major dailies.”

He is not the first person in the history of ABS-CBN News to make such a decision.

Ces Drilon and Julius Babao also said goodbye to the thankless job of being a reporter after decades of hitting the pavement day in and day out. So you see, Atom is in good company.

“He is aware that the news organization has included him in its future plans and will continue to assign him stories, coverage and events, befitting his position as a journalist,” added Reyes.

In the meantime, if you want to watch the video that made Atom a household name,  read this: “The Man in the Rain” when he bravely reported live from Tacloban City in the height of Super Typhoon ‘Yolanda’ (Haiyan) in 2013.
