‘Ma’ Rosa’ to represent Philippines in 2017 Oscars

Could Ma’ Rosa, the Brillante Mendoza drugs-themed masterpiece that won Jaclyn Jose the best actress award at the 69th Cannes Film Festival last May, win the first major Oscar Award for the Philippines in 2017?

Mendoza, who has been directing for 10 years, admitted that he wasn’t expecting his film to be chosen to represent the country, but he was happy to hear the good news.

According to Rappler, eight other films were considered to represent the country:

Felix Manalo by Joel Lamangan
Hele sa Liwanag ng Hinagpis by Lav Diaz
Pamilya Ordinaryo by Eduardo Roy Jr
Dukot by Paul Soriano
Honor Thy Father by Erik Matti
Anino sa Likod ng Buwan by Jun Lana
Ang Hapis sa Himagsik ni Hermano Puli by Gil Portes
Tuos by Roderick Cabrido.

The Film Academy of the Philippines decides on what movie is sent as the country’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the prestigious Academy Awards, ABS-CBN News reports.

Will Ma’ Rosa make it to the Academy Awards shortlist of five foreign films? We’ll know in January 2017.
