DepEd’s Most Wanted: ‘Huge army’ of math and science teachers

Despite recruiting nearly 200,000 teachers from 2010 to 2016, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced that it still needs “a huge army of teachers” for math and science.

Briones was presenting the department’s PHP 567.56-billion proposed budget for 2017 to the Committee on Appropriations at the House of Representatives on Fri, Sep 16.

“We have a challenge in hiring Math and Science teachers… A huge army of teachers, we’ll recruit more,” Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said.

With the full implementation of the K-to-12 basic education program, more educators are needed to fill the 36,461 teaching items created for the senior high school level, according to an InterAksyon report.

Briones pointed out that PHP 15.5 billion from the total budget will be allotted to hire a a total of 53,831 teachers next year.

Expert practioners and graduates of science, math or engineering courses (even without a teaching license) may apply to be a part-time senior high school teacher.

Graduates of technical and vocational courses with the appropriate TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) certification may also apply for a part-time post.
