Cardinal Tagle: The Church will be a refuge for drug dependents seeking new life

There’s a glimmer of hope in this bloody war against drugs.

Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle opened the door of the Archdiocese of Manila for all drug dependents who want to surrender and start a new life.

Buong pag-ibig po namin kayong tinatanggap at ipinapanalangin namin na ang inyong kababaang loob na pagsuko at inyong kahandaan na magbagong buhay ay basbasan ng Panginoon,” said Cardinal Tagle on Catholic radio station Radyo Veritas on Thu, Sep 15.

(It is with utmost love that we accept and pray for your humility to surrender and your readiness to start a new life to be blessed by God.)

Cardinal Tagle is confident that the partnership of the Church and government through the program “Sanlakbay sa Pagbabago ng Buhay” will help turn around the lives of those who will surrender.

According to a GMA News report, the ‘Sanlakbay’ program is a joint project of various Catholic organizations, medical institutions, the Department of Health, Department of Interior and Local Government, the Philippine National Police and Radyo Veritas.

In the same radio interview, Cardinal Tagle welcomed those who surrendered to local government units (LGU) and those who have been entrusted to the Church.

Cardinal Tagle said the Catholic Church can help drug dependents in terms of growing their spiritual life, providing livelihood projects for their family, and giving them free skills-formation training.

Now that the bloody pursuit of drug lords and pushers is the new norm, it’s refreshing to see a more gentler approach to encourage more drug dependents to surrender and turn their lives around. We hope more churches will follow suit.
